In the Journey On Relaxation exercises, I had to go through the session three times because my mind was preoccupied with my list of things that needed to be accomplished. That was evident in the first two sessions because I didn't experience the heavy arms and warm palms, not to mention the interruptions of the phone ringing or my son needing me to help him with his homework! I actually had to wait until everybody in the house was asleep to try it again!
Needless to say, the third time around was a charm! I experienced a feeling of relaxation where my my mind was clear and the stresses of the day had dissipated. I felt fully refreshed and energized as if I had been on a much needed vacation! Following the prompt to open my eyes after the exercise, I had a very vivid memory come to me of performing a similar exercise in the 6th grade! We were asked to lie down facing the ceiling on padded mats and to concentrate on our breathing. I find this similar to the state of mind I am in when I am about to drift off to sleep at bedtime. In the relaxation exercise, I focused on my circulatory system and heartbeat, which took a little longer to do than just focusing on respiration. The experience was so refreshing, it's something I need to try more often to renew energy and relieve stress!
